The Victron BMV-712 is a shunt-based monitor that shows real-time AND historical data about your energy usage and battery bank status. The Victron BMV-712 shows this data on a physical gauge mounted to the wall of your camper AND through Bluetooth on the VictronConnect app on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
Although your electrical system will technically ‘function’ without a battery monitor; it would be like running a vehicle with no fuel gauge or speedometer. So, for that reason, I would say this is a required component.
